From Flagging Breaks to Resolving Them: Agentic AI in Reconciliation

5:17

Reconciliation is the kind of work that rarely gets described accurately from the outside. It sounds like matching two lists. In practice, it's cross-referencing data from custodians, prime brokers, and fund administrators, investigating why a transaction shows up in one system but not another, tracking down the source of every break, and documenting how it was resolved.

That work has to happen every day. It has to be accurate. And it scales with the complexity of your book, not with your headcount.

Most conversations about AI in reconciliation stop at "AI can flag breaks faster." But agentic AI is a different category of technology, and it changes what the workflow can actually do. Here's how.

**What Is Agentic AI?**

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that don't just respond to prompts or generate content. They take action. An AI agent can read data across multiple sources, follow a workflow with multiple steps, make decisions along the way, and produce a completed result rather than a suggestion.

Generative AI, the category most people think of when they hear "AI," is designed to respond. A chatbot answers a question. An image model produces an image. An agent, by contrast, is designed to complete work. It has a task, it has access to data and tools, and it operates end to end until the task is done.

That distinction is what makes agentic AI relevant for operations workflows like reconciliation, where the work isn't answering a question. It's investigating something across sources and producing a resolved outcome.

**What Does Reconciliation Actually Look Like Today?**

For most operations teams, a reconciliation workflow follows a pattern. The system identifies unmatched transactions. Someone opens the exception list. They dig into the underlying data. They check the custodian file. They check the trade file. They check the corporate actions log. They figure out whether the break is a timing difference, a pricing difference, a missing transaction, or something else. They document what they found. They resolve the break or escalate it.

Each of those steps takes time. Multiply by the number of breaks in a day, by the number of accounts, and by the number of custodians, and the workload adds up quickly. When volumes spike or complexity increases, the traditional response is to add people.

That's the model that agentic AI can change.

**What Does an Agentic Reconciliation Workflow Actually Do?**

The agent analyzes reconciliation outputs and identifies unmatched transactions, the same way a traditional system would. That's the starting point, not the ending one.

From there, the agent investigates the exception. It cross-references data across the connected sources (custodian records, trade files, corporate actions, prior reconciliation history) to determine what caused the break. If it's a timing difference between the trade date and the settlement date on a specific custodian's file, the agent identifies that. If it's a pricing difference driven by a corporate action that hasn't been reflected in one system, the agent flags the underlying event. If it's a missing transaction on one side, the agent locates the source.

Then the agent produces a resolution recommendation. Not a flag. Not an alert. A recommended action, with the supporting analysis attached.

Every step is documented. The full audit trail (what data was analyzed, what the agent concluded, what it recommended, and what the human reviewer decided) is captured and retained.

**Where Do Humans Stay Central?**

The reconciliation agent doesn't operate autonomously. It works within a defined scope, and every recommendation it produces is reviewed by a human before it's actioned. Your team stays responsible for validating the analysis, approving the resolution, managing exceptions the agent escalates, and owning the overall accuracy of the workflow.

What changes is where the human effort goes. Instead of spending time on the investigation, your team spends time on the judgment. Instead of reconstructing what happened, your team decides what to do about it.

**Why Does This Matter for Operations Teams?**

The practical difference shows up in three places.

Capacity. When the investigative work is handled by the agent, your team can process more volume without adding headcount. That matters when your book grows, when a new custodian relationship gets added, or when a complex fund structure comes onboard.

Speed to resolution. Breaks that used to sit in a queue waiting for someone to have time to investigate them get worked immediately, with the analysis ready when the human reviewer opens the task.

Consistency. The agent applies the same investigative logic every time. That reduces the variability that comes from different team members having different levels of experience with different break types.

None of this replaces the operations team. It changes what the operations team spends its time on.

That's what agentic AI in reconciliation actually looks like when it's done right. Not a flag. Not a chatbot. A workflow that investigates, recommends, and documents, so the people responsible for the outcome can focus on the decisions that matter.
